Samsung TVs, which run on the Tizen operating system, offer a straightforward factory reset process accessible through the settings menu. This is a useful step when troubleshooting persistent software issues or preparing to transfer ownership of the TV.
Step 1: Open the Settings Menu
Press the Home button on your Samsung remote, then use the directional pad to scroll to Settings, represented by a gear icon.
Step 2: Go to General Settings
Select General, then scroll down to find Reset. On some older Samsung models, this may instead appear under Support > Self Diagnosis > Reset.
Step 3: Enter Your PIN
Samsung TVs require a four-digit PIN to confirm a factory reset. If you haven't set a custom PIN, the default is typically 0000. Enter this when prompted.
Step 4: Confirm the Reset
A warning message will appear explaining that all settings will be restored to factory defaults. Select Reset or Yes to confirm.
Step 5: Wait for the TV to Restart
The television will power off and back on automatically, sometimes more than once, as it completes the reset process. This typically takes three to seven minutes.
Step 6: Run Through Initial Setup
Once restarted, the TV will display the same setup screens you saw when it was first unboxed. You'll need to reselect your language, reconnect to Wi-Fi, and sign back into apps like Netflix, YouTube, or Samsung's own smart hub services.
If You Forgot Your PIN
If you've changed your PIN and can't remember it, Samsung support can often assist with a reset code, or in some cases the reset can be performed via the Support > Device Care > Self Diagnosis menu without requiring the standard PIN, depending on your model and software version.
Resetting an Unresponsive Samsung TV
If the screen is frozen and you can't access the menu at all, try unplugging the TV from the wall for 60 seconds, then plugging it back in. If the TV remains unresponsive after that, some Samsung models support a reset using the physical power button on the TV: press and hold it for about 10 seconds to force a restart, after which you may be able to access the settings menu normally.
After Resetting
Once your Samsung TV completes its reset, picture settings, sound modes, connected device names, and any parental control restrictions will all return to default. Take a few minutes afterward to reconfigure picture mode and sound preferences to your liking, since the factory defaults are often not optimized for the best viewing experience.
