Standalone speakers can be connected to a TV either through direct audio cables or through an AV receiver for a more powerful, immersive setup.
What You'll Need
- Speakers (passive or powered)
- AV receiver (required for passive speakers)
- RCA, optical, or HDMI ARC cables depending on your TV's outputs
- Speaker wire (for passive speaker setups)
Step 1: Determine Your Speaker Type
Powered speakers have a built-in amplifier and can often connect directly to a TV's audio output. Passive speakers require a separate receiver or amplifier to power them.
Step 2: Connect Powered Speakers Directly
If your speakers are powered and your TV has RCA or 3.5mm audio outputs, connect them using the appropriate cable directly from the TV's audio-out port to the speaker's input.
Step 3: Connect Passive Speakers via a Receiver
For passive speakers, first connect your TV to an AV receiver using an HDMI ARC or optical cable. Then run speaker wire from the receiver's speaker terminals to each speaker, matching positive and negative terminals carefully.
Step 4: Power On All Devices
Turn on the TV, the receiver (if used), and any powered speakers.
Step 5: Set the TV's Audio Output
In your TV's sound settings, select the appropriate external audio output option so sound is routed to the speakers instead of the TV's internal ones.
Step 6: Test and Adjust Volume Balance
Play audio and adjust volume levels on both the TV and receiver or speakers to find a balanced setting.
Troubleshooting Tips
No sound often points to an incorrect audio output setting on the TV or a loose speaker wire connection. If sound is coming from only one speaker, check that both channels are wired correctly and that balance settings on the receiver are centered.
