Roku devices come in several forms, including the Roku Streaming Stick, Roku Express, and Roku Ultra, but the setup process is largely the same across models. Here's how to get your Roku up and running.
What You'll Need
- Roku streaming device
- HDMI cable (built into stick models, separate for box models)
- USB power cable and adapter
- Remote control (included)
- Wi-Fi network
Step 1: Connect the Roku to Your TV
If you have a Roku Streaming Stick, plug it directly into an open HDMI port on your television. For box-style models like the Roku Ultra, connect one end of an HDMI cable to the Roku and the other to your TV's HDMI port. Make note of the HDMI number you used.
Step 2: Power the Device
Connect the included USB power cable to the Roku, then plug the other end into the power adapter and into a wall outlet. Some newer TVs can power a Roku Stick through a USB port, but a wall outlet connection is more reliable for consistent performance.
Step 3: Select the Correct Input
Turn on your television and use the remote to switch to the HDMI input matching where you plugged in the Roku. You should see the Roku home screen or a setup wizard appear.
Step 4: Follow the On-Screen Setup
The Roku will guide you through pairing the remote, connecting to your Wi-Fi network, and signing in to or creating a Roku account. This process also includes a software update check, which may take a few minutes.
Step 5: Install Channels and Start Streaming
Once setup is complete, you can browse the Channel Store to add streaming apps such as Netflix, Hulu, or YouTube. Sign in to each service with your existing credentials to start watching.
Troubleshooting Tips
If the screen stays blank, confirm the HDMI cable is fully seated and try a different HDMI port. If the remote won't pair, hold the pairing button inside the battery compartment for a few seconds. Weak Wi-Fi signal can cause buffering, so consider moving your router closer or using a wired adapter for Roku models that support Ethernet.
