How to Connect Blu-ray Player to TV

Blu-ray players use HDMI to deliver high-definition and often 4K video along with high-quality audio, making proper setup important for the best viewing experience.

What You'll Need

  • Blu-ray player
  • High-speed HDMI cable (required for 4K or HDR content)
  • Power cable for the player

Step 1: Connect the HDMI Cable

Plug one end of the HDMI cable into the Blu-ray player's HDMI output and the other end into an open HDMI port on your TV. If you're using a 4K Blu-ray player, make sure the cable is rated for high-speed or 4K transmission to avoid quality loss.

Step 2: Power On the Devices

Plug in your Blu-ray player and turn it on, then turn on your television.

Step 3: Select the HDMI Input

Switch your TV to the HDMI input matching the port your Blu-ray player is connected to.

Step 4: Adjust Resolution Settings on the Player

Most Blu-ray players allow you to set output resolution manually. If your TV supports 4K, ensure the player's settings match, typically found in its display or video settings menu.

Step 5: Connect Audio Separately if Needed

For surround sound setups, you may want to route audio through an AV receiver or soundbar instead of directly to the TV. In that case, connect the Blu-ray player's HDMI output to the receiver first, then connect the receiver to the TV using a second HDMI cable.

Step 6: Insert a Disc and Test

Load a Blu-ray disc and press play to confirm both picture and sound are working as expected.

Troubleshooting Tips

If the picture flickers or drops out, especially with 4K content, try a different HDMI cable, since not all cables support the bandwidth required for higher resolutions. HDCP (copy protection) errors can occur if a cable or intermediate device, like an older receiver, doesn't support the required standard, so check compatibility if you see an error message about protected content.
